I initially was drawn to the double bass because I always loved the low sounds of the orchestra. It was two years later at the age of 5 when my parents thought a more formal musical education in the form of an instrument would help solidify my musical understanding. So my musical life started then, through the art of conducting. I must have been conducting from my seat! After a brief introduction to my parents, Sara gave me informal conducting lessons which led me to my debut with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra conducting Beethoven’s 5th Symphony at age 3. A chance event became an alignment of the stars when as an audience member, then assistant conductor of the San Francisco Opera Sara Jobin (now assistant conductor of the Toledo Symphony) noticed something peculiar in the toddler a few rows ahead of her at an orchestral performance. Using a chopstick as a baton, I did my best in emulating these legends who became my musical heroes. They would often put on LaserDiscs (the older ancestor to the DVD) featuring conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa on this TV we had at home. My mother, a Chinese-Canadian who is a Juilliard-educated pianist, was my creative and spiritual guide growing up. My father, a Hong-Kong born cardiologist who emigrated to the states for college, represented the discipline and detail-oriented leader in my early life. What started as a hobby in the beginning of my musical learning initially evolved into a battle for technical mastery and now has begun to blossom as a freeing medium for spontaneity and exploration.Īs a child born and raised in the 90s, my parents were very supportive of me. Throughout this time period, my relationship with the cello has been an ongoing evolution in the way I see music as an incredibly powerful tool of expression and creativity. My name is Nathan Chan and I’ve been playing the cello for over 17 years.

I hope it highlights to many people out there, that our relationships need work, and our families and partners need our time, just as much as our businesses do.There are clear lessons to be learnt throughout this book and they can be applied to any business we might work for or own. Maybe that is more of a moral issue than a downside to the book. It's painful to listen to how he treats her, how he talks to her, but I guess that it might have been more normal behaviour for men back in the 80s. Also as part of a mixed class family with expectation to be married, have a family, work hard and move up the ladder. The only let down in the story for me and what I didn't like, was Alex Rogo's perspective of his wife's behaviour in the early stages of the book. 17 hours in three days! The storyline was very relatable for me as someone who has grown up in a family that is always looking to move forward and improve. I'm not much of a reader, so the audiobook, with all it's character voices, sound effects etc was incredibly easy for me to consume. Having worked in financial services for 19 years without this knowledge, it has dawned on me that I could have really benefitted from hearing/reading this book 10 years ago when I first wanted to get into management. This book has highlighted so many things to me. Is this a must read? Absolutely, few books have had the impact this has on my perspective of management. The narration is first rate and the voice acting was immersive and sympathetically executed. It made me realise that we need to have flex when it comes to capacity, and this is just as true in knowledge work as it is in manufacturing. Since I've read it I always ask myself ' What is the goal here?' whenever I am in a new project or even a business meeting, is it just to complete a project to time and cost? What is the bigger picture, how does this feed into the overall goal of the organisation? One part that really resonated with me was when two workers were idle next to a machine, and their supervisor had them start moving boxes from one side of the factory to the other - for what purpose? Just to they can be 'perceived' to be busy rather than contributing to the goal of the plant. Whilst the story is based on a manufacturing plant, and how their focus on efficiency was ironically killing their profits, it also has so many overlaps into a whole host of different industries. This is one of those books that will stay with me for the rest of my working life. The young son is comfortably riding on the donkey. They travelled in this way for some distance. Instead tell yourself always to seek the pleasure of God.” Luqman wanted this lesson to be always remembered. You are not likely to succeed.ĭo not pay attention to what people say. Once Luqman said to his son, “Oh son!ĭo not tie your heart in seeking the pleasure of people. His advice is equally good for all the children of the world even today. He was an African who was caught as a slave and sold in another country.Luqman was so wise and respected that a Surah in the Qur’an also is called by his name (Surah Luqman, Chapter 31). Many, many years ago there lived a scholar called Luqman. I'll start this with the recommendation that you should seek reliable sources when considering free plug ins. Damage Taken From Attacks Weaknesses can also affect how much damage your Bey takes when attacked. For example, if your Beyblade is weak against stamina attacks, then it won't do anything when hit with a stamina move.Ĥ. Reactions When Attacked With Certain Types Of Movements But Not The Others If a Beyblade is weak against one type of movement, then it won't respond when attacked with that type of movement. However, it will take damage when attacked with an attack move.ģ. If this description applies to your toy, then you should know that it has no way to retaliate when struck with a stamina move. For example, a Beyblade can be weak against stamina moves but strong against attack moves. Weakness Against One Type Of Movement But not the Other A Beyblade's weakness determines how it will react when attacked with certain types of movements. Similarly, their stamina rates of recovery also vary greatly some recover faster than others.Ģ. Their endurance ranges from weak (stamina) to very strong (stamina). Endurance and stamina These Beyblades are designed to outlive their opponents in the arena. What’s the difference between Beyblade attack and defense?Īlthough this varies based on the toy's kind and model, stamina is typically weaker against attack, defense is weaker against stamina, and attack is weaker against defense. Also, they're common in anime and manga so they must be powerful if they keep being made! There you have it! Stamina beyblades are easy to break and aren't protected by any kind of guard so they make great target blades. Popular ones include Gash Bellum from Yu-Gi-Oh! and Blade Braxton from InuYasha. Stamina beyblades are common in anime and manga. They're also good for catching energy from an opponent's attacks and releasing it back at him. Stamina blades tend to be slower than other kinds but have more power when spinning fast which makes them useful for hitting blocking beyblades. Also, since they don't come with any protective cover, they can be very easily damaged if hit hard enough. Stamina kinds are vulnerable to attack types since they have low friction, low protection, and, in the case of burst, low burst resistance, making them simpler to knock out or burst. These beyblades often have tips that make little contact with the surface and/or free-spinning components to reduce friction. Wanting total creative freedom, and without having to add conventional action sequences, Garland made the film on as small a budget as possible. Other inspirations came from films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Altered States, and books written by Ludwig Wittgenstein, Ray Kurzweil and others. Besides the Turing test, the film references the 'Chinese room' thought experiment, as well as Mary's room, a thought experiment about a scientist who has studied, but never experienced, the concept of color. Shanahan, along with Adam Rutherford, became a consultant for the film, and the ISBN of his book is referred to as an easter egg in the film. The idea was written down and put aside until later. During the pre-production of Dredd, while going through a book by Murray Shanahan about consciousness and embodiment, Garland had an 'epiphany'. Trying to find an answer on his own, he started reading books on the topic. His later ideas came from years of discussions he had been having with a friend with an expertise in neuroscience, who claimed machines could never become sentient. The foundation for Ex Machina was laid when Garland was 11 or 12 years old, after he had done some basic coding and experimentation on a computer his parents had bought him and which he sometimes felt had a mind of its own. |
